New campus strengthens Australia-Singapore relationship

The opening of James Cook University’s (JCU) new expanded Singapore campus today, highlights the investment Australian universities are making in the Asia Pacific region.

Representing the Australian Government in Singapore, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, Anthony Byrne, welcomed the investment by JCU and said it highlights the strength of the Australia-Singapore relationship.

“JCU has invested over $5 million to upgrade and improve their Singapore campus, and their presence in Singapore enhances the warm and friendly ties that have existed between our two nations."

“Australian courses offered in Singapore are highly regarded, with Singapore’s The Straits Times naming JCU Singapore campus among the top five international schools attracting Singaporean students."

“Education forms one of the key pillars supporting our excellent bilateral relationship."

“As the Prime Minister outlined in August – on his visit to Singapore – Australia’s future in the region will depend on our ability to engage constructively and effectively with the countries of the Asia Pacific."

“Through the Australian Government’s investment in Asian language and cultural education in Australian schools, the next generation of Australians will have a far greater access to and understanding of their region."

“JCU’s investment in Singapore highlights the important role Australian universities will play in the region and the work they are doing to open Australia up to our neighbours,” Mr Byrne said.

The education relationship between Singapore and Australia has historically been strong, with Singapore alumni of Australian institutions are estimated to number around 100,000.

Australian institutions alumni include four serving Singaporean Cabinet Ministers and scores of senior public servants and corporate leaders.
